Children and Young People

At Croydon Vision we run a children and young people’s project aimed at those aged 3-18 who are visually impaired or blind. Some of the children also have additional needs such as physical or learning disabilities. Sight loss can affect children in different ways often resulting in a lack of confidence as a result of not being able to access mainstream activities.

Our project gives these children the opportunity to access activities which meet their needs, building their self-esteem, independence and confidence. We want to equip these children and young people with practical and physical skills which will eventually lead them to being able to complete everyday tasks such as cooking and travelling independently; encouraging them to become more physically active through participating in adaptive sport sessions and boosting their social and communication skills through attending regular activities making new friends and meeting peers in similar positions.

We run regular monthly activities at the weekends and during school holidays and half terms. So far we have learnt how to make pizza; played VI cricket and goalball; participated in guided running; been horse riding, trampolining, rock climbing, experienced adapted biking and a touch tour theatre production with lots more new and exciting activities booked for 2019! At every opportunity we also plan activities and events to suit all ages – a family quiz or Summer BBQ – where our members of all ages can meet, chat and have fun.

We primarily work with children and young people with are visually impaired, but we also welcome their siblings and family members to come along to meet others who can share their experiences.
